TEMPORAL SPACE AND MAYONNAISE

War rugs, installation and series of still lifes with jars, tubes and bottles of mayonnaise. A series inspired by wordsmith Daryll Landbrug, a Black activist who uses other words than 'racist' when protesting against the white racist elite (because he got blocked by Facebook using the word), so he invented creative metaphors like 'white washing powder elite', 'snowmen brigade' and 'The Mayonnaise BV' (Mayonnaise ltd.). This inspired to investigate mayonnaise as a substance and question our white privileged society that is so often not aware of its institutional racism and discrimination. Also the still lifes by Giorgio Morandi were an inspiration.

FACES OF RACISM

On December 3, 2020, the beautiful wall paintings of Surinamese heroes by Hedy Tjin and Dewi Elsinga on the building of The Black Archives and VOS were defaced by two white men. It was a shocking, racist attack. Anton de Kom, Perez Jong Loy, Sophie Redmond and Hugo Kooks were painted over with white paint. Stickers were put on their eyes and mouth saying ‘sooth pete is genocide’. It was horrible, painful and threatening. Racism may never be called ‘just a joke’, or ‘some stupid guys’. Racism must end.

Anton de Kom, defaced

Surinamese anti-colonial writer and resistance hero in WWII. His portrait was painted white by racists who put stickers on it saying ‘Roetveegpiet is genocide’ in December 2020.
