Sole Survivor

What’s the effect on a human, to be the only survivor of a plane crash? Chosen one? Fate? How to continue after losing your loved ones, while being chased by paparazzi? Caravan has visited the sole survivor; the name and details will stay unrevealed. The image reflects loneliness but it is also a symbol of power and hope.

Oil on linen, 55 x 86 inches (140 x 220 cm), 2015

naruto

Naruto

Naruto, the celebes crested macaque, stole a camera from photographer David Slater and took hundreds of pictures, some of them great shots. Slater claimed the copyright, but some think Naruto should own the copyright. So there were lawsuits, settling in Slater paying 25% of his profits to an animal rights.

So is this painting plagiarism? After painting from a news photograph, Belgian painter Luc Tuymans was convicted for plagiarism...

allahu akbar

Allahu Akbar
War rug: collage of 10 paintings from the series 'Weapon: Other', unusual murder weapons.
War rugs were first woven when Russia occupied Afghanistan in the eighties, visualising tanks, helicopters, hand grenades, kalashnikovs, etc. The distinctive characteristic of these rugs is their capacity to convey their makers' experiences and interpretations of the circumstances and politics of war and conflict in the region. At the same time, this rug can be seen as a prayer rug.

Fart Air
Art rug: collage of 8 paintings from the series Weapon: Other & Associates. Art fairs have a double feeling for me; seeing great are is very inspiring, but the other side has a lot of hot air to it.
So this art rug is also a bit of a war rug, displaying some of my heroes.

Rainbow Bombs

Charged particles from nuclear high-altitude and space explosions can cross hemispheres to create an auroral display which has led documentary maker Peter Kuran to characterize these detonations as 'the rainbow bombs'. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 banned the stationing and use of nuclear weapons in space.

i have a dream

I Have A Dream

One of the most famous historical radio broadcasts was the speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, that was given in front of the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In this speech he speaks of his dream for blacks and whites to live together in harmony as equals. This speech marked the defining moment for the American Civil Rights movement.

day 1

Day 1: Plastic Cup

In the artist in residence in the Tower Room in Vondelpark, Amsterdam, I painted found objects, evidence of life. The park told me about the people in the park and the things happening. Day 1 I found a complete stolen trolley full of personal belongings of a business woman; Laptop and phone were gone. I contacted her through a stack of soaked business cards, and in the evening she picked up some of the stuff that was stolen from her a month before.

day 2

Day 2: Cutlery

In the personal stuff of the business woman, there was also an orange. Still kind of fresh, because in February the temperature outside was a fridge. And I found a lot of garbage in the bushes, like plastic cutlery and empty plastic juice bottles.

day 3

Day 3: Parakeets

Besides a large and very dead heron, I found these two little sweet parakeets. Also passed away but still looking good. The piece of paper was a small announcement of a high school party: beware of the noise, hope you understand.

day 4

Day 4: Pilsner

Every day, a group of alcoholics hang around in front of VondelCS. They always drink half liters cheap beer. But at the end of the day they clean it all up. Would be great when everybody in the Vondelpark would behave this tidy. These two cans are called Pilsner, from the largest supermarket chain in Amsterdam: Albert Heijn (nickname: Appie).
